How can it be anniversary season already?
Every year, we receive a wave of messages in the weeks leading up to a big date. Someone remembers or almost remembers that this is the year. The third anniversary. The leather anniversary. And they want to make it special.
What is the leather anniversary, and why does it matter?
The third wedding anniversary is traditionally the leather anniversary. The idea behind it, as with most of these old gift traditions, is that it represents something that has survived the early years of marriage and is now starting to show a bit of character.The thing about leather is that it changes. Not in a way that wears out, but in a way that wears in. It softens, picks up a bit of colour, and gradually takes the shape of whoever's using it. A wallet that's spent ten years in someone's back pocket looks nothing like it did the day we made it. That's not a flaw. That's the whole idea.
Why a handmade leather gift means more
We've been making leather goods in Dingle since 1989. Bags, belts, wallets, journal covers: everything made by hand, at the bench, in our workshop on the Slea Head Drive that visitors have been finding their way to for thirty-seven years.
Some of those visitors were celebrating anniversaries. Some were on honeymoon. Some came back years later, with the belt we made them still going strong, and a new occasion to mark.
That's the thing about something made properly. It doesn't disappear after a year. It carries a bit of the place it was made. It has the workshop in it, the leather, the stitching, and the time.
What makes a good leather gift?
The honest answer is: something they'll actually use.
We've noticed over the years that the best gifts aren't always the most dramatic ones. They're the ones that end up in someone's back pocket every day, or on their shoulder every morning, or on their desk looking quietly excellent.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your leather gift.

Choose leather that will age beautifully. In our workshop, we use vegetable-tanned leather, which is the traditional method using natural tannins from bark and plants. It takes more time and costs more, but the result is leather that develops a lovely patina over the years. That’s the kind of leather that makes a great anniversary gift.

Consider the long term. A handmade leather piece, if cared for, can last twenty or thirty years. This is not just a marketing claim; it’s simply what good leather does. Our wallets are slim, practical and made from full-grain leather. They don't try to do too much. They hold cards, hold notes, and over time they hold a certain shape that is entirely the owner's own.

Father's Day and the leather anniversary often arrive close together on the calendar, which means belts come up a lot in this workshop around this time of year. And for good reason.
Agood leather belt is one of those things most people don't think to buy for themselves. They wear the same one for years, usually one that's starting to look tired, and never quite get around to replacing it. Which is exactly why it makes such a good gift.
Each of our leather belts is made by hand, stitched and finished in the workshop. Customers often tell us they’ve been wearing their belts for 20 years and more. That's the kind of thing that makes the work feel worthwhile.
A leather journal cover
For someone who writes, travels, or simply likes to keep a notebook,a leather journal cover is a quiet, thoughtful gift. It wraps around a standard notebook and lasts long after the pages inside have been filled and replaced.
